Characterization of Spawning Behavior in Cultured Delta Smelt

چکیده

We examined cultured Delta Smelt Hypomesus transpacificus under laboratory settings to provide the first formal characterization of spawning behavior, which included quantification participants and diel patterns. video recorded behavioral observation trials in four mature males ripe females interacted freely for 9–11 d. found that three behaviors were consistently associated with egg release: (1) two or more fish swam close proximity one another just above substrate tank floor, (2) together synchronously during fast, forward-swimming movements (bouts) while tandem another, (3) female(s) released eggs male(s) presumably milt bouts. also five participated any given spawn occurred at night. Furthermore, spawns observed across consecutive nights within a trial up 17 times night, indicating individuals spawned serially single clutch cycle. This study enhances our understanding mating system informs ongoing conservation efforts.

Characterization of 24 microsatellite loci in delta smelt, Hypomesus transpacificus, and their cross-species amplification in two other smelt species of the Osmeridae family.

We characterized 24 polymorphic tetranucleotide microsatellite loci for delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) endemic to the San Francisco Bay Estuary, CA, USA. Screening of samples (n = 30) yielded two to 26 alleles per locus with observed levels of heterozygosity ranging from 0.17 to 1.0. Only one locus deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, suggesting these individuals originate from a s...

Evidence of rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) spawning in Mohican Canyon, a tributary of Otsego Lake

Groups of Rainbow smelt were observed spawning in the first riffle in Mohican Canyon upstream of Otsego Lake. Adult smelt were collected with a shore seine on 22 April 2001. Sampled fish (n=17) had an average length of 176.8 mm total length (TL) and weight of 34.2 g. Despite these observations, no larval, juvenile or adult smelt were collected in any trawling or gill netting activities in Otseg...

Gamete Release and Spawning Behavior in Broadcast Spawning Marine Invertebrates

The release of eggs and sperm into the environment for external fertilization is common (Giese & Kanatani 1987) and thought to be the ancestral mating strategy (Wray 1995). Most phyla have at least some species that release sperm into the environment (free spawning or spermcasting) and a majority have representatives that also release eggs (broadcast spawning) for external fertilization (Levita...

Losses of Sacramento River Chinook Salmon and Delta Smelt to Entrainment in Water Diversions in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta

Pumping at the water export facilities in the southern Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta kills fish at and near the associated fish-salvage facilities. Correlative analyses of salvage counts with population indices have failed to provide quantitative estimates of the magnitude of this mortality. I estimated the proportional losses of Sacramento River Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and del...

Characterization of Atlantic Cod Spawning Habitat and Behavior in Icelandic Coastal Waters

The physical habitat used during spawning may potentially be an important factor affecting reproductive output of broadcast spawning marine fishes, particularly for species with complex, substrate-oriented mating systems and behaviors, such as Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. We characterized the habitat use and behavior of spawning Atlantic cod at two locations off the coast of southwestern Iceland ...
